brought to you by Egg Boy

Old egg boy doesn’t buy CDs so much anymore, opting instead for the vinyl format, but every once in awhile, something jumps out and screams ‘BUY ME.’ And when the egg boy walks to Union Square after his 9 to 5 and sees the Mudd Truck sitting in front of Virgin Megastore, eggers is gonna get himself a nice hot cup of their coffee, a brew so fantastic that he’ll tell you it’s the best cup of joe he’s ever had.

Ask him.

And walking around the record store (not really accurate anymore…there is a reason its called a megastore, as in, mega-overpriced), with that hot steaming caffeine running through his veins, egg boy has only one tempo on his mind: 160 beats per minute. And right there in the new releases, sits a new mix CD from Breakbeat Science records. Breakbeat Science is a drum and bass label here in New York City, a well-named and respected one at that. In fact, they have a record store (this time, that term IS accurate, as they have many records there for sale) in the Lower East Side, a washed-out white fluorescent place with lots of delights for people on caffeine or just living their lives at the hectic pace of 160 beats per minute.

Anyway.

There was a mix CD on Breakbeat Science records, a brand new release, for $5.99!!!

That’s $6 and change for a drum and bass comp on a local label! Excellent. So thank the Mudd truck for my state of mind, but damn, this record label is awfully smart. Selling a sampler-type CD of tracks off their label, in Virgin ‘mega’ store, for $6.

I bought it on principal (and on caffeine…maybe they’re in cahoots w the Mudd truck…?).

And, lo and behold, it was gooood. Sure it’s drum and bass, and if you aren’t a fan, don’t bother. But this review is to say nice job. It’s a killer mix by a cool label at a great price. Just think if all the record labels sold their wares for a reasonable rate. Old egg boy might actually buy a CD once in awhile.

Pros: Non-stop spiffy drum and bass mix
Cons: It’s monotonous, but in this case, it should be
Useful for: Drinking Mudd coffee and walking around NYC in sub zero weather
